The heavy airplane bombs are "particularly vexing" for air defense systems built to strike lighter targets. Hi-tech air defense missiles are designed to strike more lightweight targets and are ill-equipped to counter the bombs' old, heavy iron construction. This makes them a weapon that the latest air defense systems, like the much-vaunted US Patriot missiles, were not designed to combat, military experts say. The distance from which you can strike the enemy is low, forcing aircraft to fly into the danger zone of the enemy's air defense systems. They can reach a target of 30 miles away, out of range of most of the air defense systems on the frontline.

Ukrainian soldiers retook two villages south of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, a think tank reported. The attacks inflicted "severe" damage to Russian troops, The Institute for the Study of War said. The respected Institute for the Study of War said Ukrainian troops breached a strategic defensive line that Russian forces tried to hold onto in the area south of Bakhmut, citing Ukrainian military officials. The Ukrainian recapture of the villages — Klishchiivka and Andriivka — likely left Russian forces battle-worn and less able to fight. Ukraine's advance into new villages is the latest example of its steady but costly progress in the monthslong counteroffensive.

The first line has been hard to pass, but analysts say too many resources have been focused on it. A change in command likely means Russia's not utilizing the depths of its defenses, analysts say. Michael Kofman, a defense analyst and senior fellow at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told The Kyiv Independent that Ukraine was now working on breaching the second line. AdvertisementAdvertisementUkrainian generals say that the second line of defense will likely be far easier to break through, the Kyiv Independent reported. The Putin regime has leaned heavily on propaganda to rally support for its war in Ukraine. In doing so, it has come to rely on military bloggers to spread its message and back its efforts. Milbloggers also have become an indispensable tool for Western governments, think tanks, and media to track the Russian war effort. But the relationship between Putin and milbloggers illustrates the complexities of social media in an authoritarian state. Many milbloggers are ultra-nationalists with deep ties to the Russian military and intelligence agencies.

Russian forces wound up bombing their own occupied territory in Ukraine in a botched attack Friday, Ukrainian officials alleged. The Russians reportedly meant to drop the explosives at the Ukrainian-held right bank of the Dnipro River, a military spokesperson said. Russian state media said 15 people were hurt — and blamed the strike on Ukrainian forces. But Russian state-run news outlet RIA Novosti blamed Ukraine military for the explosion, saying it was Kyiv's forces that struck the residential area in Nova Kakhovka, leaving 15 people injured. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently admitted Kyiv started the counteroffensive too late, giving Moscow ample time to plant countless land mines on Ukrainian soil.

The defection was first made public in late August, but additional details about the Russian pilot who flew a Mi-8 helicopter to Ukraine were released by Ukraine's Defense Intelligence in a video posted on Sunday. Kuzminov communicated with Ukrainian defense officials via the encrypted messaging app Telegram and came up with a plan to fly the stolen Russian helicopter into Ukraine.

Ukraine developed the weapon after Western states were reluctant to supply long-range missiles. Ukraine claimed that the new, domestically designed missile system destroyed Putin's highly-prized Russian S-400 "Triumf" missile system in Crimea last month. Ukrainians fighting in the northern sector of the frontline say they're buckling under Russia's attacks. Ukrainian commanders told the Financial Times that there was increasing use of heavy artillery instead, intended to clear a path for sappers and infantry units. The report comes after Ukraine suffered considerable losses of Western-supplied heavy vehicles. It was on machines such as Bradley infantry-fighting vehicles, tanks, and mine-clearing equipment that Ukraine had pinned much of its hopes for its counteroffensive. But by turning to artillery bombardments, Ukraine faces further issues — namely, a shortage of 155 mm munitions, among others. Analysis suggests that Ukraine is outgunning Russia in the artillery fight, taking out four Russian howitzers for every Ukrainian one destroyed, Forbes reported.

Wagner forces destroyed six Russian helicopters and a plane amid its short rebellion, Ukraine says. It's too soon to see how the chaos between Wagner and the Russian military establishment will affect things on the ground, she said. In one year of defending against Russia, Ukraine had shot down about 30 of Russia's helicopters, Forbes reported in February. At that time, Russia had about 300 helicopters — around half of them attack helicopters — based near its western borders, The Kyiv Post reported.
